LAHORE: Brig Mohammad Abbas Abbasi, Amir of Bahawalpur, was today [July 31] sworn in as Governor of the Punjab at a simple ceremony in the Durbar Hall. Chief Justice Sardar Mohammad Iqbal administered the oath. Mr Abbasi succeeds Mr Ghulam Mustafa Khar, who relinquished his office this morning and shifted to his private residence in Gulberg. The appointment of Nawab Abbasi signifies rather rapid changes in the Punjab politics. The second term of Mr Khar as Governor lasted hardly five months, while Mr Haneef Ramay resigned the office of Chief Minister only this month. Brig. Abbasi, who was born in March 1924, got his Army commission during the second World War. — Staff correspondent
